Lüsswiese

Salty lake sediments for sweet wines

The Lüsswiese (“field meadows”) vineyard site is situated between Podersdorf am See and Illmitz, directly next to Lake Neusiedl. Lüsswiese is slightly elevated as compared to the land around it. There is a groundwater pond at the edge of the vineyard, which was usually built in vineyards close to the lake to collect excess water and to ensure that the vineyards remained dry.

The soil consists of sandy chernozem based on saline sand sediments washed in from the lake and a subsoil containing sodium carbonate and clay.

Our vineyards at Lüsswiese are planted with Welschriesling, Sämling and Muscat wines, which are suited primarily for the production of noble sweet wines. Being situated directly next to the lake, the vineyards produce the best sweet wines. We also grow Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon there. They can cope perfectly well with the hot and dry sand soil and are blended into our Lüss cuvée wine.
